Course Title

Rethinking Destinations: Sustainable Governance, Territorial Resilience, and the Future of Place Management

Course Description of Student-Led Course

This interdisciplinary course explores the transformation of Destination Management Organisations (DMOs) from promotional bodies into strategic institutions for sustainable destination governance. It examines how tourism destinations can balance economic development, environmental protection, and social inclusion in response to challenges such as overtourism, environmental degradation, and community tensions. The course brings together perspectives from tourism economics, urban geography, sociology, environmental studies, and territorial planning. Through discussions with international scholars and practitioners, students analyse governance models, stakeholder engagement, territorial resilience, and sustainable place management. The course contributes to the New European Bauhaus values of Beautiful, Sustainable, and Together by fostering dialogue across disciplines and territorial scales, promoting regenerative approaches to tourism development, and encouraging collaborative problem-solving.

Learning Outcomes

Students will engage with international debates on sustainable destination governance; understand key concepts related to DMOs and sustainability-oriented governance; critically assess growth-oriented tourism models; evaluate governance arrangements from multidisciplinary perspectives; and develop evidence-based scenarios for the future of destination management. Learning outcomes align with the New European Bauhaus values of Beautiful (connection and multi-level engagement), Sustainable (regenerative thinking and long-term planning), and Together (interdisciplinary collaboration and participation).
