Course Title

How to Manage Green Events

Course Description of Student-Led Course

The course “How to Manage Green Events” is an interdisciplinary, challenge-based educational module that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to design, organize, and evaluate sustainable and inclusive events within university environments.

The course addresses one of the most visible dimensions of campus life—academic, cultural, and social events—and explores how these activities can become drivers of environmental responsibility, social inclusion, and institutional transformation. Students will investigate the environmental footprint of events, focusing on key impact areas such as transportation, catering, energy consumption, procurement practices, material use, and waste generation. They will learn how to apply principles of circular economy, sustainable procurement, lifecycle thinking, accessibility, and participatory design to create low-emission and resource-efficient events.

The educational approach combines theoretical foundations with practical application. Through interactive lectures, workshops, case studies, and collaborative projects, students will analyse existing university events and identify opportunities to improve their sustainability and inclusiveness. Working in interdisciplinary teams, participants will develop realistic redesign proposals and innovative event concepts that balance environmental goals with organisational feasibility, affordability, and user experience.

A central component of the course is cooperation with the university’s Welcome Point, where students will examine a real campus event addressed to international students, doctoral candidates, and academic staff. Based on stakeholder analysis and sustainability assessment, they will propose practical solutions to reduce environmental impacts, enhance accessibility, and strengthen community engagement.
By integrating sustainability studies, event management, social sciences, and design thinking, the course empowers students to become active contributors to the transformation of university campuses into greener, more inclusive, and student-centred environments. The course directly supports the objectives of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance and the principles of the New European Bauhaus: sustainability, inclusion, aesthetics, and participation.

Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

  • Identify and critically assess the environmental, social, and organisational impacts generated by campus events, including emissions related to transportation, catering, energy use, procurement, materials, and waste management.
  • Apply sustainability principles such as circular economy, lifecycle thinking, sustainable procurement, and low-emission planning to the design and management of university events.
  • Design innovative, realistic, and inclusive event concepts that contribute to the transformation of university campuses into greener, more accessible, and socially responsible environments.
  • Conduct sustainability assessments of existing events and formulate evidence-based recommendations for reducing environmental impacts and improving social inclusion.
  • Collaborate effectively in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams, integrating knowledge from different academic fields and perspectives to solve complex sustainability challenges.
  • Communicate sustainability solutions through professional reports, poster presentations, and public discussions, adapting messages to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Develop future-oriented competences, including sustainability literacy, systems thinking, critical thinking, responsible decision-making, creativity, and participatory approaches to campus transformation.
  • Demonstrate awareness of the principles of the New European Bauhaus—sustainability, inclusion, and quality of experience—and explain how these principles can be translated into practical solutions for campus events and community activities.

The learning outcomes contribute directly to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), while fostering active student engagement in the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance’s mission of creating green and inclusive campuses.
