From Fountain to Forum

Course Title
From Fountain to Forum: Professional Communication from the English Classroom to the Building Site
Course Description of Student-Led Course
"From Fountain to Forum" is a student-led interdisciplinary project module focused on the transformation of a currently non-functioning fountain located in the backyard of the University of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Geodesy into an active and inclusive gathering place for students.
The course explores how neglected campus infrastructure can be reimagined through collaborative design as a social, cultural and educational space.
Students will work with the existing fountain and surrounding outdoor area as a real-life testing ground for spatial experimentation. Through research, observation, participatory mapping and design development, participants will create proposals for transforming the space into a small-scale campus forum for meetings, informal learning, exhibitions, discussions, rest and student-led cultural events.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course students will be able to:
• analyse an existing campus space from architectural, environmental and social perspectives
• identify the potential of underused spaces for transformation and community use
• work effectively in interdisciplinary teams
• develop and communicate design concepts in response to real campus needs
• apply sustainable and inclusive design principles in practice
• present design ideas visually, verbally and publicly
• practical English/use of English
• understanding and making basic decisions and assumptions about the work of other specialties
• understand how spatial design can improve student wellbeing, campus identity and everyday university life
The learning outcomes align with the NEB Compass through sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion and contribute to SDG 4, SDG 11 and SDG 12.
