Erasmus+ BIP “The Theatre and the City” at University of Bergamo

The Erasmus+ BIP (Blended Intensive Programme) “The Theatre and the City,” organised by University of Bergamo in collaboration with the universities of the European alliance—Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Université Lumière Lyon 2, and Université de Picardie Jules Verne— took place in Bergamo in person from March 30 to April 3, 2026, and online from April 20 to 21.

The BIP “The Theatre and the City” included seminars, workshops, and guided visits to sites of interest for performing arts culture in Bergamo and Milan, and was aimed at students and faculty from the alliance universities as well as the Department of Letters, Philosophy, and Communication.
The program’s objective was an interdisciplinary analysis of the connections between theater and the city, viewed as cultural heritage. Participants explored principles, concepts, methods, and best practices related to cultural and performative heritage, as well as its value in shaping the imagination and functions of the city.
Studying the relationship between the city and performance—through the intersection of perspectives from performing arts, literature, architecture, and visual arts—offered an opportunity to examine history and cultural traditions with a critical and informed perspective on the value of cultural heritage. This value was in the deep connection that, since antiquity, has linked performance, urban planning, and landscape.
